Smartphone Art

facebook_event_175522842604200

There is a saying among photographers: The best camera you have is the one you have with you. And there is no camera more available than the one on your phone.

Toss out that Kodak Instamatic, throw away that old 35mm film (Film? What’s that?) camera, and you might as well discard that expensive new digital camera you just bought, too, for the Age of “phoneography” has arrived.

Whether you have an iPhone a Droid or any other brand of smartphone or cellphone that takes a picture, this exhibit is for you. Whether you’re a professional photographer or just enjoy messing around with your phone, this exhibit is for you.

The Stray Birds

facebook_event_484536701594624

The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series is a smoke & alcohol free environment in an intimate 200 seat hall. Concerts start at 8:00 PM almost every Friday at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, in Morristown New Jersey. (The 2nd Friday usually an Open Stage/audition night.)

Admission is $8 on your way in plus the what you think the show was really worth on your way out.

http://www.thestraybirds.com/fr_home.cfm

The Stray Birds is a collaboration of three musicians and songwriters, Maya deVitry, Oliver Craven, and Charles Muench, informed by a background of traditional and family music. All hailing from rural Lancaster County PA, they apply fiddle, banjo, guitar, upright bass, and 3 beautifully blended voices to their own songs and traditional old-timey music.

Openers Ken & Pat Rolston (Key figures in the Folk Project favorite quartet, WSAGNBSCALRME) hark back to the founding days of the Project. Their voices blend with the ease of two natural singers who have been singing together most of their lives. Their material ranges from acapella traditional ballads to swing to Corsican field hollers Randy Newman to whatever else suits their wide-ranging musical tastes. And the charming blend of Ken’s mad-wizard personna leavened by Patsy’s tolerant sanity makes them a joy to experience onstage.

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein has become one of the world’s most beloved musicals. Featuring the famous melodies of “Edelweiss”, “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do-Re-Mi”, and the title song “The Sound of Music,” this blockbuster won a Tony Award for Best Musical and later the movie musical adaptation won an Academy Award for Best Picture. When Maria proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. After their honeymoon, the family’s narrow escape from the Nazi’s over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides a thrilling finale!

Red Mill Tours

facebook_event_290680714400268

This spring and summer the Red Mill Museum Village will host Spirits of the Red Mill evening tours. Led by a spiritual medium and restricted to a limited group size, these intimate tours will provide visitors intrigued by paranormal activity the opportunity to view the Museum in the evening with the guidance of a professional medium.

Throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, many people worked at the Red Mill and adjacent quarry that is today the site of the Museum. Laborers faced dangerous conditions, blasting limestone from the cliffs of the Mulligan Quarry, harvesting ice on the river, and working amongst quick-moving Mill machinery. The site’s mystique generated by its historic buildings and the tough working conditions of early industry has led paranormal research teams from up and down the East Coast to investigate the Museum. Many have reported signs of paranormal activity. Guests of previous Spirit Tours have also reported the experience of paranomal phenomenons and/or paranormal interactions channeled through the spiritual medium.

This spring and summer, don’t miss out on your opportunity to visit the Museum after hours. Tours will be offered on these Fridays May 10th, June 14th, July 19th, and September 6th. Two, one-hour tours each night are offered, the first at 8:00pm and the second at 9:15pm. Tour space is limited and advanced registration is recommended.

To make a reservation or for questions, please call Amy Boyce, Curator of Public Programs at (908)735-4101 x102 or email programs@theredmill.org. Tickets for tours with the Spiritual Medium are $30 per person. Museum Members receive a 10% discount. Tours may not be appropriate for children. Parental discretion is advised.

Light refreshments will be provided before the tour. While luminaries will light your way outdoors, the grounds and buildings can be dark. Guests are encouraged to bring a flashlight. Cameras are also permitted.
